If you have visited the Garden recently, you may have noticed some bird houses hanging around here and there. The houses were built by Environmental Science Students on the Decatur Campus of Georgia State University, taking classes taught by Dr. Dan Bulger. They were then sent to the Art Department at the college, where they became the creative medium for a number of Art Students. Under the direction of Dr. Phil Mosier, the students decorated them in unique and colorful hues. Finally, the English Department initiated the first Writer’s Forum Garden Poetry Contest under the leadership of Dr. Rosemary Cox of the Clarkston campus. Nearly 30 entries came from students, faculty, and staff and from various campuses. Of these, 12 were selected as finalists. The selected poetry was inscribed on plaques and placed in the garden to enhance the experience of visitors.

On June 3, 2016, a Poetry in the Garden celebration—“A Garden of Verse and Song” was held in the Native Plant Botanical Garden on the Decatur campus. Poetry was read by the writers, plaques were placed in appropriate places in the Garden, and everyone enjoyed the beauty of the garden and refreshments. We are excited about the involvement of our students in creative activities in the Native Botanical Garden, and we look forward to more such collaborations in the future!
